How do you make pure water from sea water with certain materials?
Question : You are stranded on an island, you are dying for water. How do you get pure water when you have sea water surronding you?
On the island there are certain materials:
- A bunsen burner
- a gas supply of matches
- a tripod, a gauze and a heat-proof mat
- stands fitted with bosses and clamps
- a conical flask
- a test tube and a delivery tube
- a beaker
- and lotsa sea water.
Please help me write a set of instructions, and if you can please help write how to put the apparatus up. Thanks, BTW, I will choose a best answer.
Put seawater in the conical flask and put it on the gauze on the tripod above the bunsen burner attached to a gas supply (on a desert island!). You need some way to seal the flask (rubber stopper with a hole in it) and a glass tube through the stopper — I guess that is the delivery tube.
You will heat the sea water and water will evaporate leaving behind the salt. The steam is carried up into some condensation device. Ideally you would cool the steam using cold water but it can be done just by having the collection area in the shade etc. and the condensed water will drip down into the beaker for you to drink.
Every now and then dump the brine and refill afresh.
